The Parish Hall addition to Christ and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Norfolk, as a property listed on the National Register of Historic Places, required strict adherence to the U.S. Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. The new addition provides classrooms, multipurpose rooms, a choral rehearsal room, and a kitchen and catering facility, while a parallel restoration effort returns the original Parish House theater to active use.
The centerpiece of the addition is a Convocation Hall that extends the volume of the existing nave, creating a visual and spatial connection to the park across the street and establishing an intermediate zone between the built church and the surrounding landscape. The Hall serves the congregation for receptions, fellowships, gatherings, and concerts. The new construction is clad in the same Port Deposit Granite as the historic church, but with a modern honed finish that distinguishes old from new while honoring the material continuity of the ensemble.
