Designed in collaboration with architect Yianna Bouyioukou and structural engineer Chakar Consulting and carried through to plan check submission, the Randall Residence is a complete renovation of a 1967 ranch-style house in Marina del Rey.
Working within a compact 2,500 sq. ft. footprint with little room to expand, the design for a family with two growing children focuses on spatial efficiency and a dramatically improved quality of light and space. The central move is a vaulted Douglas Fir ceiling composed of heavy timber harvested from the Pacific Northwest that unifies the reconfigured kitchen, dining, and living areas beneath a single generous volume. At the rear, a wall of sliding doors dissolves the boundary between inside and out, merging the interior with the yard in the Southern California tradition.
Wood paneling and concrete floor tiles complete the interior palette. The exterior is clad in cement fiber panel rainscreens under a standing seam metal roof. Following plan check, the owners elected to demolish the existing house and build a prefabricated structure on the site instead.
