A 78,000 sq. ft. tenant improvement for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, designed for The Ratkovich Company under the auspices of the LA County Chief Executive’s Office, in collaboration with the County’s Internal Services Department.
Located in Building A-11 on the Alhambra Community campus, the DHS Centralized Finance Office occupies two full floors and a portion of a third, housing open workstations, private offices, conference rooms, break rooms, new restrooms, and secure storage — all delivered within a $4 million construction budget.
With few windows or exterior views available, the design uses a distinct but related color palette on each floor to orient occupants and give each level its own identity within the larger whole. Herman Miller furniture and workstations remain consistent throughout, providing visual unity across the office. Where the building structure permitted, interior steel pipe columns were left exposed — adding spatial interest to the open-plan floors and lending the interiors an industrial honesty that offsets the building’s otherwise closed character.
